Openfire XMPP Chat Server: migrating from windows to linux demystified
I’ve been using openfire chat server for about two years now. It has been a fantastic cost-effective solution for our clients to communicate efficiently and securely, the solution scales from 2 users to massive, and it’s very easy to setup and administer. Openfire is a fully featured XMPP real time collaboration (RTC) server offering full support for traditional IM, web-based or managed queue, voice and video chat as well as rich media sharing.
The Open Source project is maintained by Jive Software, the social business application powerhouse. Jive maintains the development community and makes sure the project implements important fixes, improvements to stability and XMPP protocol compliance. They continue to do a great job with the most recent release being Openfire 3.7.0 beta 2 weeks ago.
If users are currently using public chat services for corporate communications, I would strongly encourage you to investigate Openfire. The benefits of bringing a widely used service like this in-house are tremendous, but mainly I would cite security as the number one benefit. Most other chat protocols/services do not use TLS/SSL or it’s optional and off by default, and thus it’s a low-hanging vector for data breach and leakage. But hopefully I’m preaching to the choir, because this post is for current Openfire users.
Recently, a client needed to migrate their Openfire service off a windows machine to a linux server. What a great idea! It’s a fairly straightforward install on the linux box until you try to move the database. Openfire can use an embedded flat file db or an external database (MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, IBM DB2, HSQLDB).
Unfortunately, moving a MySQL database from windows to linux can be a roadblock to what should be a quick and easy migration. Windows likes to ignore case, but linux sees a table name in lowercase as a separate table from one using all caps or even one uppercase character.
Hopefully by sharing my solution, I’ll save somebody the couple of hours I spent implementing this.

I geeked out huge doing this. I probably could have spent more hours manually changing the case inside the .sql file to get it to transfer correctly. Or some of you may show me the way this should have been done with one button click(please do!) – but I just could not find that button.

Install the Openfire server, but do not login to configure it. When you configure the server, it will create a new empty database, great for a first time installation, but you want to reuse the database.

On the windows machine, shutdown the service and export/backup the database. Check your tables, the base install of openfire includes 58 tables. The macro below renames 58 tables to the correct mixed case, and switches an IP and a machine hostname.

Open your .sql backup of your MySQL database in Word. Copy the macro below and paste it into the visual basic code window. To do this in Word 2007, click the developer tab, click Visual Basic, hit the F7 key to show the code window if it’s not already there, and paste the macro. Scroll through the macro to assure yourself it only does find and replace. Change the last two segments for your own IP and hostname info – or delete these segments if you don’t require them.

The windows to linux tablename issue can be addressed for any MySQL application this way. You’ll need to create your own word macro specific to your application. I made this macro by mail merging the windows and linux db schemas into the VB find/replace code.

Close the VB Editor. Back on the Developer tab of Word, click Macros. You should see the little macro of love MySQLWintoLinux_LoveEmpowerT there for you. Select it and click Run. It took about a minute to replace all the lowercase tablenames with the Linux mixed case equivalents on my client’s db. You may want to get up and stretch, go grab some tea or tweet a deep thought.

Voilà! The macro should have done a massive find and replace on your MySQL backup. It’s now ready to be restored onto your linux MySQL database. Save the file, making sure you do not preserve the formatting as a word document – It needs to stay a plain UTF-8 text file. Pay attention to where you’re saving the document and name it something different from the original backup. (Not trying to insult your intelligence, just avoid the ‘where the did I save that file?’!)

Create the openfire db at the mysql> command line or in PHPMyAdmin. Run the modified .sql file on the new, empty db. You should now have the full database on the linux machine.

Login to http://newservername:9090 and take a look around. You should see evidence of your previous openfire installation.
